Renting or chartering an entire aircraft as opposed to trying to get individual aircraft seats on airlines is a fast-growing and popular business. From the point of view of the person who is chartering the aircraft, it is highly satisfying and increasingly profitable. Air charter companies have many areas to specialize in but the most common focus on individual private aircraft and itineraries, urgent or time-sensitive freight, cargo, air ambulance and any other forms of on-demand air transportation for individuals and groups.
Aircraft charters also go by the name of 'air taxis', 'executive charters', 'jet charters' and is considered a part of the general aviation field. In the United States, aircraft charter businesses are governed by Part 135 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. These regulations are not as strict as the standards of Part 121 of the FARs, which are regulations designed for scheduled air carriers and airlines.
In other words, it's a lot easier to start a charter service for executives, individuals, and small affiliated groups than it would be to start up a regularly scheduled airline service for the general population.
There are many benefits to chartering a private plane or signing up to a chartering service. The convenience of being able to avoid the hassles of security checks and baggage requirements makes it the number one benefit for those who don't want to be bothered with airport and airline restrictions.
Other benefits include not having to drive so far to your workplace - especially if you live more than 75 miles from your work. The price of gas is making long commutes cost prohibitive and charter flights are a great way to beat the cost in the intermediate term. How nice it is to share the cost of a charter commute with 3 to 5 others of like mind?
Club charters are also gaining favor as those who belong to a particular club or association can charter a plane for a weekend to a popular resort or private resort and have a lot more fun than if they made the travel arrangements for themselves to meet others at the chosen location. Charters to Lake Tahoe are popular as well as to Las Vegas, Mexico, Alaska fishing groups, hunting clubs etc.
Sports teams and entertainers often charter flights to their destinations to avoid the public eye. Aircraft charter services are becoming more and more popular with executives who can afford them.
